Here are the basic instructions on how to cook various types of rice to achieve the ideal texture and flavor.
White rice
Ratio: 2 cups of water per cup of rice / 1 dl per 1 1/2 dl
- Rinse rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch.
- In a pot, combine 1 1/2 to 2 cups of water per cup of rinsed rice, depending on your preferred texture (1 1/2 cups for firmer, 2 cups for softer). Add pinch of salt (optional).
- Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a lid, and simmer for 18-20 minutes.
- Remove the pot from heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes before serving.
Brown rice
Ratio: 2 cups of water per cup of rice / 1 dl per 1 1/2 dl
- In a pot, combine 2 cups of water per cup of rinsed brown rice. Add pinch of salt (optional).
- Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a lid, and simmer for 40-45 minutes.
- Remove the pot from heat and let it sit, covered, for 10 minutes before serving.
Jasmine rice
Ratio: 1 1/4 cups of water per cup of rice
- Rinse rice under cold water 2-3 times. Transfer to a pan, add water – 1 1/4 cups of water per 1 cup of rice.
- Bring the water to boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to low, then place lid on. Cook for 12 minutes or until water is absorbed.
- Remove the pot from heat and let it sit, covered, for 10 minutes before serving.
